SOUND EXAMPLES OF
CAT VOCALISATION TYPES

Here you can find a few typical sound examples of the most common cat vocalisation types. Short sound examples are played up to three times. The figures show the acoustic sound pattern of each vocalisation: waveform, spectrogram, and for voiced sounds a fundamental frequency (F0) contour. You can find detailed descriptions of the different vocalisation types under CAT SOUNDS in the top menu.

THE MEOW

Waveform (top), spectrogram (mid, bandwidth: 300 Hz) and F0 contour (bottom) of an example meow.

THE TRILL

Waveform (top), spectrogram (mid, bandwidth: 300 Hz) and F0 contour (bottom) of an example trill.

THE HOWL (OR YOWL)

Waveform (top), spectrogram (mid, bandwidth: 300 Hz) and F0 contour (bottom) of an example howl.

THE GROWL

Waveform (top), spectrogram (mid, bandwidth: 300 Hz) and F0 contour (bottom) of an example growl.

THE HISS

Waveform (top) and spectrogram (mid, bandwidth: 300 Hz) of an example hiss

THE SPIT

Waveform (top) and spectrogram (mid, bandwidth: 300 Hz) of an example spit.

THE SNARL

Waveform (top), spectrogram (mid, bandwidth: 300 Hz) and F0 contour (bottom) of an example snarl.

THE PURR

Waveform (top), spectrogram (mid, bandwidth: 300 Hz) and F0 contour (bottom) of two ingressive and two egressive phases of an example purr.

THE CHIRP

Waveform (top), spectrogram (mid, bandwidth: 300 Hz) and F0 contour (bottom) of four example chirps.

THE CHATTER

Waveform (top) and spectrogram (mid, bandwidth: 300 Hz) of an example short sequence of chatter.
